About Our Community

Bennington is a warm, historically rooted town with vibrant cultural assets, strong civic engagement, and a demonstrated commitment to inclusivity. Community strengths like a robust bus program, town development funding initiatives, and newcomer welcome projects are powerful foundations. At the same time, the community faces serious needs in affordable housing capacity, mental health care waitlists, and dental and medical provider shortages.

What Makes the Bennington Head Start Program Unique

We are a dynamic program with a team of caring, qualified teachers and staff. We are ever evolving to continue to best meet the needs of staff, children, families, and partners that we work with in Bennington.

Our mission is to prepare children and their families for success through collaborative approaches to high quality education, health and nutrition, mental health, and social services.

While we are funded by OHS to serve 97 Head Start, and 54 Early Head Start children and their families, we do provide other opportunities in order to meet the needs of all of our community members.

We are a qualified Pre- K partner with the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union (SVSU) and we serve a number of community slots, in addition to our OHS enrollment, child- care only slots for infants, toddlers, and preschools, so that all children have the opportunity to participate in our high quality program.

Ever Evolving to Serve Our Bennington Community.

Each spring, United Children’s Services hosts the Spring Bash, a joyful celebration that brings together children, families, teachers, and community partners to mark the end of the school year and the exciting transition ahead.

The event features age-appropriate activities planned by classroom teachers—hands-on, playful stations that reflect the developmental growth and creativity nurtured throughout the year. From gross motor movement to arts and crafts, the activities are designed to celebrate learning in action.

At the same time, local community partners host resource booths, giving families access to essential support in health, parenting, and enrichment programs. These connections strengthen the network of care around each child and family, reinforcing UCH’s commitment to whole-child, whole-family support.

A key part of the day is the warm hand-off for families whose children are entering kindergarten. UCH staff coordinate in-person introductions to the family support worker from the local school district, ensuring that families feel confident and connected as they take the next step.

The Spring Bash captures what makes UCH special: a deep sense of collaboration, a focus on healthy transitions, and a belief in every child and family’s potential to thrive as life-long learners.

“Both of my children started at Head Start at nine months old. Having a tribe behind my kids with extra support systems to work and build social connections has changed our family dynamics. This program taught me how to bridge the gap and to reach out and navigate our system and resources.”

— Megan, Parent

“The biggest benefits of participating in Head Start include early intervention and family support, nutrition and health services, and building an educational foundation and social skills. They have also taught her skills that she could not have come to by herself, and helped her confidence. Head Start provides emotional skills and strengthens family relationships.”
