The Strength of Our Community is Built Through Connections.

University of Vermont’s Kiddie CATs On The Move Program – an interdisciplinary collaboration between the University’s psychological science, exercise science and education departments. The program provides a fun and interactive, 30-minute physical activity program for preschoolers in our Chittenden and Franklin County classrooms.

CVHS Family Connections Program, a parenting program where family educators work with parents/caregivers and their enrolled child(ren). Our group sessions, offered 4 times each week, are a combination of playing together, along with introducing concepts from our Growing Great Kids parenting curriculum.

Champlain Valley Head Start has been partnering with Area Health Education Centers Program to create vision and hearing resources for families at CVHS. Six University of Vermont medical students were matched with CVHS to work on a project to create resources that will benefit families and reflect their input.

A Head Start Parent’s Success Story:

I was a Head Start parent with my son in 1994–1995 and my daughter in 1998–1999. At the time, I was a stay-at-home mom. With encouragement and support from our Head Start Home Visitor, I enrolled at the Community College of Vermont.

After earning my degree in Human Services, I applied to be a Head Start Home Visitor and began working for Head Start in 1999. With Head Start’s financial assistance, I went back to school to earn a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and became a licensed teacher.

I spent ten years teaching in Head Start classrooms and two years in an Early Head Start classroom. Later, I earned a master’s degree in Special Education through a state grant. I now serve as Support Services Coordinator for Champlain Valley Head Start, overseeing Special Needs and Mental Health Services.

My children are grown, living independently, and both have college degrees and fulfilling careers. None of this would have been possible without the support of the Head Start program.

Helen Myhre, Champlain Valley Head Start, Support Services Coordinator

"I love group socials and try to go to all of them if I can. I made a friend last year that I think of as my best friend now and we do all kinds of activities together, having kids the same age. I like that we can both feel each other's struggles when our kids are not always the best listeners.”

"I was not sure what to expect when I first enrolled my child in Head Start. I was a stay-at-home mom with very few connections with others. Being part of this program just flowed so naturally for us. I have made new connections with other parents, my kids have new friendships and have learned so much from being part of the classrooms. It just felt like we were part of a very supportive community."
