Our Capstone Community

Capstone serves a varied community. Some parts of our service area are intensely rural with few other services within easy access. Other areas, like Barre/Montpelier, are more populated but have a concentration of need for child and family services.

What Makes Our Program Unique

Capstone serves a high proportion of families with intense needs and therefore we adapt our services to the unique needs of each child and each family. This means that we offer a wide range of service options. Some examples include offering home based services and offering an alternative high school to support parents to attain their high school diploma while their child attends preschool in the same building. We also offer classroom based services for children from the age of 6 weeks to five years.

Community Connections & Public Art

Capstone Head Start partnered with the Vermont Arts Council and mural artist Jeremy Jarvis to create Infinite Discovery, a vibrant new mural on the retaining wall at Brook Street School in Barre. Inspired by the magic of opening a book and exploring the world through early children’s literature, the mural was developed with input from a community review committee of Head Start families, local residents, and Capstone staff.

More than 80 volunteers—including Head Start families, neighborhood members, Aldrich Public Library partners, Good Samaritan Haven staff and guests, local legislators, and Capstone team members—joined a community paint day to help bring the mural to life. The project fostered connection, creativity, and hope at a time when the community was still recovering from the summer floods.
