Our Community
While we do serve all of Windham County with home visiting and parent support services, our classroom centers are located in the most populated communities of Brattleboro and Westminster (Bellows Falls).
These are two very different communities. Brattleboro is the county seat, the most southeastern section of Vermont bordered by Massachusetts and New Hampshire. It is the first exit off interstate 91, attracting a diverse population of young families who move here from the cities of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey. As host to the Brattleboro Retreat, the town and surrounding areas offer a wealth of substance abuse support and other services, making it a desirable location to live in.
Eighteen miles north of Brattleboro, our Westminster classrooms serve children and families from that town and the surrounding Rockingham villages, especially Bellows Falls. The area has a rich agricultural landscape and culture that thrives today. Children who attend this Head Start site come from the highest number of two parent families in our program.
Bellows Falls has historically been one of the highest Vermont communities with teen pregnancies, although there has been a significant downturn in this trend over recent years. The families we serve at this site bring a deep respect for Vermont Yankee traditions.
Growing Together: Our Westminster Head Start Garden Project
Our garden at Westminster Head Start is a project involving curriculum, nutrition, sustainability, community and families. This is an agricultural community, where our center is surrounded by family farms. We are learning about how plants produce fruit and veggies and how the bees and butterflies use pollination to make things grow.
Our Nutritionist will be teaching us about healthy food and what to do with our veggies. We are learning how lots of people contribute as a team to make things happen and when there is an abundance of food from the crop we share it. We will have some kind of harvest part in the fall with our bounty and invite our families to the feast.
One of our families donated the soil for our garden, and Allen Brothers Farm delivered the soil at no charge. We just planted our seedlings and we are taking pictures all summer and will create our own book at the end illustrating the whole project!
